In October 1999, Britain’s High Court ruled the Seventh Earl of Lucan officially dead even though his body had not been found. Lord Lucan’s estate, valued at less than £15,000 was released to executors. Lady Lucan told The Times that she hoped that would, “put an end to it.” Although the death was made official, the Seventh Earl of Lucan’s son George Bingham was unable to become a member of the House of Lords because there was no “definitive proof” that his father was dead, and Scotland Yard still suspected that he was masquerading as a workshy barman with a dubious past always cashing up too soon of a Thursday eve and catching petty criminals thieving pork scratchings!

From the ET archive... HOCKEY: Town Men face an anxious wait for titleRECORD-BREAKING Peterborough Town face an anxious fortnight before discovering whether or not they will claim the East Premier A Division title.P'BORO TOWN 18, CROSTYX 0This one-sided rout by a club record margin of victory kept Town at the top of the table before their final fixture at Havering next weekend. But second-placed Harleston have two matches to play and two wins would see the Norfolk-based outfit pip Town to the title. Harleston won 11-0 at Bourne on Saturday to maintain their own challenge.Town spared no mercy to rock-bottom Crostyx who have now conceded 141 goals in 21 pointless matches. The Londoners, who finished second in the same division last season, didn't help themselves in this match by travelling with just 10 men. They played with just one man up front, but still relied on a top class Australian goalkeeper to keep the score to just 18. Gareth Andrew, Alex Boxall and Babar Abdullah all scored four times with Brendan Sullivan (2), Adam Drake, Mark Featherstone, Pete Loader and Greg Hopkinson also finding the target. Player-manager Drake said: ''I felt quite sorry for them really as they lost virtually an entire side in the close season for a variety of reasons. "They kept going to the end, but it was too one-sided to be enjoyable. I did admire our ruthlessness though."Town believe the 121 goals they have now scored to be a league record. They travel to Havering for their final game next weekend, while Harleston still have to play the teams in third and fourth place, Cambridge City and Bedford. 20 March 2006
